By Primary 5, math homework shifts from "can you calculate?" to "can you understand the story?" Word problems — often called problem sums in Singapore — carry heavy weight in PSLE Paper 2. Parents who only check final numbers miss half the battle.
Why word problems dominate PSLE Math
Paper 2 rewards multi-step reasoning, clear working, and correct units. A student strong in arithmetic can still lose marks when they:
- Misread keywords ("left", "more than", "of the remainder")
- Pick the wrong heuristic (guess-and-check vs model drawing)
- Forget to convert units (cm vs m, min vs h)
- Stop one step early in a 3-part question
Heuristics your child should recognise
MOE materials reference problem-solving strategies (heuristics). You do not need to memorise every label — but P5–P6 parents should recognise these patterns:

- Working backwards — When the end state is known
- Guess and check — Small integer trials (use sparingly in exams)
- Before–after — Transfers, spending, pooling quantities
- Supposition — Assume all items are one type, adjust
High-frequency P5–P6 topics
When tagging mistakes, these topics appear again and again:
- Fractions & percentages — Of a remainder, discount, GST-style contexts
- Ratio — Changing ratios, unchanged total, sharing
- Speed — Average speed, meet/overtake, unit conversion
- Volume & rate — Water filling, leaking, partial containers
- Age problems — Difference constant over years
Build a mistake log by topic — not by assessment book title. Two wrong ratio questions teach more than twenty fresh drill pages on topics already mastered.
How parents can help (without solving it for them)
- Underline key numbers and nouns — What is changing? What stays the same?
- Ask which method fits — "Is this part–whole or comparison?"
- Require one sentence answer — PSLE expects units and context ("Ali has 24 stickers").
- Time a retry — Reattempt a similar question days later; one-off explanation is not retention.
