If your child can compute but freezes on word problems, model drawing (also called the bar model method) is often the missing skill. It is taught from Primary 3 onward and appears throughout PSLE Paper 2 — yet many parents were never taught this approach themselves.
What is model drawing?
Model drawing turns a word problem into a visual diagram — usually horizontal bars — so students can see relationships between quantities before writing equations. Instead of guessing which operation to use, they map:
- Part–whole — Two parts add up to a total (e.g. boys + girls = total pupils).
- Comparison — One quantity is more or less than another (e.g. Ali has 3 times as many stickers as Ben).
- Before–after — A quantity changes over time (e.g. spending, sharing, transfers).
MOE examiners reward clear working. A neat model often earns method marks even when the final answer is wrong.
When schools introduce it
Most Singapore schools teach basic bar models from P3, then layer on fractions, ratios, and multi-step problems in P4–P6. By PSLE year, students should draw models quickly for:
- Fraction and percentage problems
- Ratio questions (e.g. 2 : 3 sharing)
- Age problems and simultaneous changes
- Geometry questions that hide a part–whole structure
How to help at home (without redoing tuition)
- Read the question aloud — Ask: "What do we know? What are we finding?"
- Label the bars — Use short names (A, B) or units, not long sentences inside the diagram.
- One unknown per step — Multi-step PSLE questions break down when kids try to solve everything at once.
- Check the model against the story — Does "spent $12" shrink the right bar? Does "twice as many" show two equal units?
Common mistakes to watch for
- Wrong total bar — Treating a remainder as the whole instead of a part.
- Mixing units — Drawing ½ and 3 in the same bar without converting to the same unit.
- Skipping the model — Jumping to algebra or mental shortcuts that break under exam pressure.
- Careless labels — Correct diagram but wrong quantity named in the final sentence.
Log repeated model-drawing errors in a mistake book tagged by topic (fractions, ratio, before–after). Reviewing those patterns beats doing ten new assessment-book pages blindly.
Model drawing and AI homework tools
Photo grading apps can mark final answers fast, but word problems need reasoning checks. When your child gets a model question wrong, focus on whether the bars match the story — not just the number. ZY Math archives wrong questions by topic so you can revisit model-drawing weak spots during revision week.
